I tend to think internal narratives are the most powerful thing in our lives. Unfortunately we tend to migrate ideas externally into the internal without considering our own values and definitions of success.
That is where a lot of people lose themselves without noticing.
They inherit a definition of success, work hard to live inside it, then wonder why the win feels thin when it finally shows up.
